Introducing Jesus
John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"
When I was young I remember being taught very carefully how to introduce myself to others and also how to introduce one person to another. There was a certain protocol in the order of who was introduced to whom, if it were done correctly. It was customary to include the title, office or relationship we had with those we were introducing. We actually practiced it, using role play. I hope that is still being done in homes and in schools.
In our verse today, John is introducing Jesus to his disciples. He didn't say, "Here comes my cousin Jesus," or "Here comes Jesus, the carpenter." No, he went far beyond that; he declared him to be the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." Here was Jesus, near the very beginning of His public ministry, a ministry that would take Him all the way to Calvary's cross. There He would become God's sacrificial Lamb, and there lay down His life for you and for me. Our sins would all be laid on His blessed head there and holy God would pour out His righteous wrath on the innocent Jesus for our guilty sins.
Oh, how He suffered for you and me, dear reader! Is He your Lamb; have you made it a personal matter with you? Have you said, He died for me, ________, and put your name in the blank?
As Christ followers, how do we introduce Jesus. It is so different, isn't it? Now the personal relationship is reflected in our choice of words, in our emotions, in our face: He's my Savior! He's my Lord! He's my keeper! He's my healer! He's my advocate with the Father! and so on and so on.
Oh, Lord Jesus, our hearts burst forth in praise and adoration to you today, not just what You've done for us but for who You are to us. As we have opportunity, Lord, may we introduce you to others with loving enthusiasm. Amen.
